Message from the President

Dear Friends,

Vince Lombardi once said, “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses or the problems of modern society.”

Cancer remains today a major health problem in our society. Each year here in Wisconsin alone, over 25,000 residents are diagnosed with cancer. That’s 1 person every 20 minutes who will hear the words “you have cancer”. Medical professionals and industry groups are today tirelessly pursuing better ways to predict, diagnosis, and treat cancer, with the ultimate goal of preventing cancer altogether. Progress is being made, particularly where early diagnosis takes place. For example, early detection in major cancers such as breast and colorectal cancer is translating into reduced mortality. Cancer will not be cured overnight… but by working together, progress will continue.

Vince Lombardi Charitable Funds is now in its 38th year of raising funds for cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. As the new President, I am humbled by the mission and tradition represented by the Lombardi organization. Working together, over $11 million has been raised for the Wisconsin fight against cancer, with $801,143 delivered to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic from 2007 fundraising. The importance of working together was highlighted recently at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic Annual Meeting. Members of the Cancer Services staff, as well as administrators of Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, continuously thanked the Lombardi Board, committee members and other supporters for their commitment to improving the lives of cancer patients and their families. We are making a difference.

Thanks to each of you for making 2007 a success. It only happens when hundreds of dedicated volunteers join together to make it so. The Board of Directors and I are committed to growing Lombardi contributions in 2008 and beyond. With your help in this time of promise, we can deliver. Thanks for being a part of the Lombardi team, and thank you for enabling the important life-saving work that is done each day at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.

Sincerely,

Christian M. Barry
President
