About usMission | History | Board of Directors | Message from the President | Past Presidents | Meet the Starr's | What it takes to be #1 History Over three decades ago, one of the greatest sports figures of all time and winner of countless battles on the football field could not beat his final foe. Coach Vincent T. Lombardi died on September 3, 1970 at the age of 57, a victim of colon cancer. This event started a process that has changed the lives of thousands of cancer survivors and the lives of those who still face the fight.
In 1971, the first annual Vince Lombardi Memorial Golf Classic was held with the support of Mrs. Marie Lombardi, members of North Hills Country Club and other civic-minded individuals. The purpose of the Classic was to raise money for cancer research and education in memory of Coach Lombardi. Today, the 501(c)(3) has an Executive Director and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who donate time, talent, energy and personal resources toward the goal of defeating cancer in the true Lombardi spirit of excellence. The organization has grown to include other fundraising programs such as the Vince Lombardi Award of Excellence Dinner Ball, Lombardi Walk for Cancer, Lombardi Run to Daylight, Lombardi Food & Wine Experience and the bedrock of our fundraising, Blocks of Granite. Through the years, the Vince Lombardi Charitable Funds Board of Directors and its many supporters have raised over $11 million to help fight cancer. Its sole purpose is to raise funds for cancer research, education, patient care and early detection at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. We attribute our success to the special celebrities, volunteers, vendors and friends of the Lombardi who have made a world-class contribution to the cause of curing cancer. "The spirit and the wil to win and the will to excel, these are the things that endure." - Vincent T. Lombardi
